Earthing Systems

The most important function of earthing system is to protect people and equipments by reducing the potential difference between non-current carrying conductive metal parts and earth. The earthing arrangement for an electrical system is used for protective and functional purposes according to the requirement of electrical installation. Protective purpose always take precedence. Earthing system is also essential to dissipate the transient currents due to lightning as well as for effective operation of surge protection devices. Electronic systems use earthing to provide signal reference. Performance of earthing system depends on the effective operation of all components involved such as conductors, connectors, electrodes etc.

The earthing system, its components and bonding conductors shall be capable of distributing and discharging the fault current without exceeding thermal and mechanical design limits based on backup protection operating time. The earthing system shall maintain its integrity for the expected installation lifetime with due allowance for corrosion and mechanical constraints. Earthing system performance shall avoid damage to equipment due to excessive potential rise, potential differences within the earthing system and due to excessive currents flowing in auxiliary paths not intended for carrying parts of the fault current.

There are different types of Earthing systems.

  • Rod Earthing
  • Plate Earthing
  • Pipe Earthing
  • Structural earthing Earthing

Based on use-cases and applications, the recommended type of earthing varies. Get in touch with us to know what’s best for you.
